Title page of gospel according to John

Title page of gospel according to John
Artist - Grigor Tatevatsi, 1378
Gospel, 1297

Plates 10 - 13. Title pages.
All four title pages of cod. 7482 have about the same composition. The headpiece, as a rule, occupies 1/3 of the folio and is a slightly elongated rectangle, with a circular groove and ill that space, the evangelist's name is written. The first lines of the evangelical text begin with ornate initials. The ornamented line is followed by the text, which occupies half of the titlepage. Similar compositions of title pages are characteristic of the XII - XIII century miniatures. The manuscript being copied in the XIII century. The scribe was naturally guided by the standards of his epoch, leaving for the headpiece not 1/2 (as in the beginning of the XIV cent.) but 1/3 of the page, leaving the greater part for the text.
